In the world of landscape and seascape photography, we often talk about what the best gear is and something that is often forgotten about is what we have on our feet.
Having the right gear for any part of photography can make all the difference. Whether you’re trudging along muddy footpaths on the Moors, exploring rocky shores in North Devon, standing at the base of a waterfall in the North West of Scotland or standing for hours in frozen or flooded fields on the Norfolk Broads, having a reliable pair of decent wellies is essential. In this blog, I introduce you to a pair of wellies that I have stood in all of those mentioned places that are not only comfortable and warm but also built to withstand the rigours of outdoor photography over time, allowing you to focus on capturing breathtaking shots without compromising your comfort. They have withstood my neglect and never been cleaned, such as constantly scrambling over rocks and getting soaked on the insides from going too far in the sea, yet they still perform like the day I got them. In my opinion, there is nothing like a review that is actually field-tested over time and this is exactly that, one pair of wellies with one careless owner that is still using the same bit of gear many years later
Say hello to the “ROCKFISH - Walkabout”
These exceptional wellies have been meticulously designed with the needs of those who hike a lot in mind. The company ROCKFISH make a fair few different types of wellies shaped for both men and woman with an emphasis on them being from an equestrian background but with additional research going into ensuring these boots are a dream to be wearing around the farm and also for walking in, all being scenarios where you are wearing your boots over prolonged periods of time if not all day.
The Walkabouts are the series I opted for and these have an outsole which is designed with hiking technology and a supported arch for comfortable all-day wear, delivering an anti-fatigue wellie for long walks. They combine comfort, warmth, durability, and practicality to ensure that your photography trip remains enjoyable and productive even during the most challenging conditions and I can 100% vouch for this, I purchased mine long before Covid, around early around 2018 and I can say this is one of those investments I am so glad I made, yes a pair of wellies costing over £100 seems like a lot, but considering my love for seascape shooting destroyed 2 pairs of decent walking boots in 1 year and these are still going as strong as the day I purchased them, they have more than paid for themselves by now.
Comfort for Extended Sessions:
One of the standout features of these Wellies is their unparalleled comfort, making them an excellent choice for photographers who often find themselves on their feet for hours on end. The wellies feature cushioned insoles that support and reduce fatigue. The contoured design ensures a snug fit, preventing discomfort and blisters that can arise from ill-fitting footwear. As an unfortunate sufferer of plantar fasciitis after running a half marathon in 2022, I find these wellies to fully support me while I am out on my camera trips, so my mind is on my image-making, not on me worrying if I will be able to walk back to the van. I have lost count of the number of times I have worn these boots now for 5-hour stints on the UK coastline during workshops and never once have I been itching to kick off the wellies and get something more comfy on my feet, it just feels like you are wearing the best fitting boots going.
Warmth That Keeps You Shooting:
When you’re out in the field during colder seasons, maintaining warmth is essential for your well-being and the quality of your work. The Walkabout Wellies come equipped with a 5mm neoprene layer insulating material that effectively traps heat, keeping your feet warm and cosy even in cold conditions, boasting protection down to -25°c, now I am yet to test that low a temperature in the UK, but I can vouch for -9°c while stood on the Norfolk broads whilst only wearing a pair of thin black Tesco nylon socks and these boots and my feet were nice and toasty warm. This means you can confidently brave the cold without worrying about frosty toes hindering you from bagging that dream shot. But the clever tech does not stop there, as they also have a 2mm wicking air mesh lining, which is added for moisture management and breathability in warmer weather, I have found this means I can wear these boots with socks in the UK temperature ranging the mid 20°c range without feeling like my feet are cooking. Anything warmer than that and I am choosing my location wisely so I know it’s okay to be in the water barefooted or at the most wearing flip-flops and wading in the water and enjoying a lovely cooldown with my dog, so wellies are not really needed then.
Built to Last:
Landscape and seascape photography often involves traversing rugged terrain, rocky shores, and muddy landscapes. The Wellies are built to withstand the harshest environments. Crafted from high-quality, hard-wearing materials, these wellies are resistant to abrasions and tears and waterproof right to the top of the boot, ensuring your feet stay dry and comfortable in damp conditions. The sturdy soles provide excellent traction, giving you the stability needed to navigate uneven surfaces safely even in the thickest and stickiest of muddy environments like Morston Quay where I am often wandering about with my camera and I know on many occasions this really nice thick grip has saved me from ending up facedown in the mud on numerous occasions.
Practical Features for Photographers:
Beyond their comfort and durability, the Wellies include thoughtful features tailored specifically for photographers. The adjustable calf straps allow you to achieve a secure fit that prevents slipping, while the easy-to-clean design ensures that your wellies will be ready for your next adventure in no time. Additionally, the neutral colour options ensure that your wellies won’t distract from your photography or clash with your outfit as we all know we want to look our best when our photo mates are taking pictures of us in action 🤣
Conclusion: I never shout about or recommend anything unless I believe in the product myself and after investing my own money in it. So if I had to replace these boots due to losing them or whatnot, I would do it with these exact same boots again at the drop of a hat and with no questions asked at all apart from how quickly can they be delivered to me. At the end of the day, investing in a pair of comfortable, warm, and hard-wearing wellies is a game-changer for landscape and seascape photographers.
Having the right gear is essential if you want to be out in all weathers and stay safe and focused on the job at hand in various environments, wet feet are never fun and really can turn a few day’s photo trip into a less fun experience, hence why I am always happy to squeeze these into any space available for trips away including flights with limited suitcase space. In regards to the sizing of the wellies I would 100% go 1 size up, so for a UK size 10 I would go for a UK size 11 to allow for wearing of walking socks.
The ROCKFISH - Walkabout Wellies really have excelled in every situation and environment I have placed them in, from the Heights of the rugged Scottish Northernmost coastlines to the miles of sandy golden windswept beaches of Norfolk right the way through to the disused slate quarries of Wales providing me with a reliable and supportive footing for thousands of miles and with thousands more of life still in them.

In 2022 we supplied a number of our Groundhog wellies to the charity. This year we have gifted the staff the Walkabout boots. Both the Groundhog and Walkabout wellingtons giving thermal warmth to -25*C. We are extremely pleased to have greatly improved the working conditions for the staff outdoors, in the freezing winter temperates. In the summer these thermal boots are wicking, using an air mesh lining. Moisture and heat is managed for breathability in warmer weather.
Elliot, Senior Animal Care Specialist at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary said
"The walkabout wellies are an absolute dream. They are puncture proof and great for working around the seals. Our team have nice and toasty feet even in cold and icy conditions. They give excellent grip around the slippery pools and also look very professional. They are super comfortable and great boots to wear all day. Rockfish are a brilliant company that we are so lucky to be supported by."
]]>I was cautious to try them, but actually as soon as they were on I didn’t notice that I was carrying more weight on my feet. My feet also felt more secure and protected than they did in the Le Chameaus as the outer material is thicker and more rigid.
Because of this rigid style, they were really easy to put on and take off. This is a real bonus in my opinion because it means when you’re heading out the door with your riding jacket in one hand and riding hat and keys in the other, you can just slide your foot in and continue on your way. Because of this, the Walkabouts became my go-to boots – I just knew they were no faff to get on, easy to take off when I got home cold, wet and muddy, and they could cope with being flung into my car boot.
I am a size 4½ but sized up to a 5 as they aren’t available in half sizes and Rockfish suggests sizing up. This is actually the smallest size they do in this style, so if your feet are on the small side, you’ll need to check out our selection of the best wellies to find another. They fitted well and allowed plenty of room around the calf – mine measure 38cm at the widest point. I had the adjustable side gusset at its tightest, but if you were to loosen it the boot will allow for a much wider calf – and I would say these are the widest I’ve tried so far.
They felt roomy around the ankles and the soles were quite rigid, but overall I found they were really supportive. I noticed they felt narrower in the foot than some of the other wellies I tested, but only when I put the other boots on straight after could I notice the difference. I was never uncomfortable – and I lent them to a friend for a walk who normally takes a size 6, and she agreed they were comfortable.
I wasn’t so sure about the logo on the front, but I reminded myself these are yard wellies not fashion wellies. I haven’t thought about this since, so it really wasn’t a bother – and I would say that they look smarter in real life than many of the images I’ve seen online. The Walkabouts are available in black, blue, green or otter, which is the colour I tried. I’ve had a few compliments from friends at the yard saying the shape suits me, too. I think this is the cut at the top of the boot – if you look at the front on picture you will see they are shaped rather than an equal height the whole way around.
These boots were worn throughout Storms Eunice and Franklin in February 2022. They were warm, waterproof and sturdy – definitely up to the job – and I look forward to continuing to wear them. So far they show no signs of wear and tear – and where I find that some wellies perish and crack at the front, I just can’t see that happening with this material.
The Walkabouts are a fair bit cheaper than competitor boots, such as the Le Chameau Vierzonords – and I think they are great value for money. You need to spend a fair bit for a decent pair of wellies – and this price seems more than fair, especially when I compare them to others.
These boots took me by surprise. I found them to be sturdy, comfortable boots that are ideal for the yard. My favourite thing about them is how easy they are to put on and take off – now that I have such a large selection of wellies to choose from every day, I find myself opting for these more often than not because of this.

And that’s especially true when it comes to footwear; after all, if you’ve ever had cold, wet feet all day, you’ll know how miserably uncomfortable the rest of you will be, too. This is even harder to avoid when you spend your day working with marine animals.
Luckily, following years of bad wellies and freezing feet, this is where the team at ROCKFISH swooped in to help.
After a desperate call from the carers at the sanctuary, they donated 12 pairs of ‘Groundhog’ wellies to the charity to help the team stay comfortable, dry and warm, no matter the weather.
And it’s no stretch to say these sustainable, natural rubber wellies have transformed their working day, which means they can carry on doing the amazing work they do, without freezing their toes!
Now, ROCKFISH has become a long-term partner of the sanctuary, pledging to provide new wellies to the animal care team every year. Director Jules Aldred, meets Polly & Elliot during an enrichment session with the seal.
Animal behaviourist Polly Frier says it’s a partnership which has transformed daily life for the team;
“We’re absolutely thrilled about our partnership with ROCKFISH. The Groundhog wellies have made a huge difference to my day. Keeping my feet warm and protected really makes all the difference when you’re out in the cold for hours on end!”
Following the donation, Polly and her colleagues were so excited about the amazing quality of the boots, and the generosity of the ROCKFISH team, that they even named one of the rescued seal pups after the Cornwall-based business.
The poorly pup faced a quick stint in the hospital, followed by a few months in the rehabilitation pool, before being released back into the sea earlier this year.
Polly added, "The Groundhog wellies go a long way to helping us do our job properly, ensuring pups like Rockfish are nursed back to a healthy condition so they can go back into the wild. “The boots look incredibly smart, too, whilst also being comfortable and functional with the work that we do."

]]>Rockfish was founded in 2003 and is a family run business that is based at an organic farm in Cornwall, spending much of their time in wellingtons boots and having been let down by other brands they set out to create their own.
Inspired by the local coastline, ocean, the granite terrain and large amounts of mud on the farm, they had the perfect setting to test out their range. The Groundhog boots have been created with natural rubber and the Rockfish formulation that aims to ensure the rubber doesn’t perish prematurely. The wellies are available in sizes 5UK – 13UK in men’s and women’s and in either Olive or Black, they are beautifully made but don’t let that fool you, these boots are constructed for hard and dirty work. They are 100% waterproof, the 5mm neoprene provides a four way stretch which makes climbing about, squatting and sitting down comfortable, the adjustable gusset and calf fastener allows the wearer to obtain a precise fit. The neoprene provides an effective insulation all the way down to -40C whilst the Airmesh technology helps to maintain the internal climate of the boot. The deep lugs give these boots solid grip even in the toughest terrains, the insole is well padded and has focused on arch support whilst the EVA midsole provides shock absorption for all day comfort.
With all this protection around the foot you might expect them to feel a bit heavy but they are in fact very light on the feet, they are also resistant to horse urine which can degrade rubber and the reflective detailing on the back of the heel helps you to be seen in low light. The Groundhog Wellingtons are hard workers, made for long days outside and in the muck and will keep your feet as warm, dry and comfortable as they were at the start of the day.
I’ll start by saying these Rockfish Walkabout wellies exceeded my expectations. They are definitely workmanlike as wellies go – built for long days on your feet at the yard in bad weather. When I took them out the box I immediately noticed how much heavier they felt compared to other wellies I had tested recently. I was cautious to try them, but actually as soon as they were on I didn’t notice that I was carry more weight on my feet. My feet also felt more secure and protected than they did in the Le Chameaus as the outer material is thicker and more rigid.

Initial thoughts – great, comfortable boots that are easy to put on and take off.
These are our first impressions of a piece of kit or clothing based on spending some time with it. We will have had our hands on it and given it a really thorough going over before trying it on ourselves or our horses and using it. The information we can give you after this first look will give you some sense of what it’s like to use, even if it’s only an initial view. As soon as we’ve given it a more thorough test, we will update the review with a full scoring and additional thoughts – and possibly award it “Horse & Hound Approved” status.

]]>As dog lovers ourselves, we’ve been there, done that, and back then had wished that someone had guided us on the things you actually need for walking your dog. So, here we are, combining our top recommendations on what you need for a safe, comfortable and fun dog walking experience.
Dog Tags
Microchipping your dog is now a legal requirement in the UK, but did you know that having a dog tag is too? Having a tag on the collar can help someone identify your wandering doggo and to give you a call straight away, reuniting you both! There’s no need to put your full details, or even your fur babys name – Just a phone number will do! There’s a good selection of Dog Tags available on the Dogs Trust website, which means you’d be helping give other dogs a better life as well!
Paw Cleaning
We’ve all had it happen to us before – tried to keep our dogs on the nice, clean path, avoiding any puddles and mud, but somehow they always manage to find that one mudbath… But you can be prepared with the Paw Buddy! Easy to use and small enough to fit in your walking bag, muddy pawprints over your freshly cleaned floor is a worry of the past! And it’s a multifunctioning tool, with a comb on one side for you to be able to detangle the longer fur and to get the mud and debris off your dogs’ coat.
Neoprene Lined Wellies
Does your dog drag you out at crack of dawn to just sniff around and take ages to do their business? You might as well stand around in lovely warm wellies that look fantastic on the city streets OR in country mud. Our Groundhog Wellington Boots are built with your comfort in mind. Keeping your feet warm in temperatures as low as -25°C, you’ll be happy to stroll for as long as your canine wishes!
If you’d like to learn more about the great benefits Neoprene lined wellies has to offer, check out our previous blog!
Frisbee
Dog seeming to have endless energy and you’re struggling to keep up? Us too. That’s why it’s always a good idea to have a frisbee on hand! Usable in most open spaces (just make sure it’s secure and your dog has good recall!), the Hyper Pet Flippy Flopper can get some serious air-time and have your dog bounding around having a blast. It can even float on water, so if you’re looking at getting into some water agility with your pooch, this toy is a solid choice that won’t be breaking any windows.
LED Collar Attachment
Whatever the time of year or time of day is, if your dog wants to go, you got to go! To add some safety and visibility to the darker walks, we recommend you get some form of LED for your walking gear. Attaching this Soft Blinker to your dog’s collar can increase the visibility and let you really see where they are and what they’re up to. If that’s a wander through the park, down the street, or even a quick trip outside to the back garden!
Dog Waste Bags
Love your community and love your planet by picking up your dog’s waste when out for your walk. Over at Beco, they’ve created an ecofriendly choice for cleaning up after your pooch, with strong Poop Bags made out of cornstarch! And the packaging the rolls come in is fully recyclable too, letting you feel good about the bags you pick up poop in!
Wellington Socks
Whatever the weather, your dog needs a walk, and you want to keep your feet warm, dry and comfortable. That’s why we’ve teamed up with Bridgedale to design and engineer socks made specifically for wellie wear! Our Performance Knee High Wellington Boot Socks are designed to keep your feet smelling fresh and looked after with reinforcement in critical areas. And to make the deal even sweeter, you can now get a pair FREE with a purchase of any of our tall wellington boots! Now your feet will be looked after in style.
Tracking
Letting your dog run off lead can be pretty scary when you lose sight of them, even if they’re only innocently sniffing a bush. To avoid the gut-wrenching anxiety of not having your dog in your immediate vision, why not get a tracking system you can add to their collar. Highly popular for it’s accurate directions, the Apple AirTag can be securely attached to a collar or harness with a simple accessory and it’s long lasting battery can give you peace of mind on all your wanders.
Water Bowl and Bottle
Wherever you walk, it’s always best to be prepared, especially in the hot summer months! Having water at hand is always a great start, but where are you going to pour it? We recommend having this handy Wild & Woofy Dog Travel Water Bottle & Bowl with you on every walk! Small and able to be clipped to your belt loops, keep your dog well hydrated and as healthy as can be!
Dog Whistle
Have you wanted to take your training to the next level? A dog whistle might be an option for you! Giving your dog a sharp, clear tone to hear, the Company of Animals Dog Whistle is also lightweight and very simple to use – just blow! Now you and your dog can work on recall and take your companionship to new heights
And something a little extra…
Boot Care
To keep your ROCKFISH Wellingtons pose ready for all your doggy adventure snaps, we highly recommend having a bottle of Grangers Rubber Boot Care at hand. A spray on product that restores the appearance of rubber, it’s as simple as spray on, wipe off and buff in!
When out on your next walk, make sure to share a snap of your prized hound alongside your ROCKFISH wellies and our other recommendations! #rockfishrockstar

Neoprene is a synthetic form of rubber and is more durable than its traditional counterpart. Very resistant to extreme conditions, it’s considered (not just by us!) to be a good choice for an outdoor boot.
Traditionally non-traditional
We’ve all seen the traditional design of a full rubber welly boot, right? Here at ROCKFISH, all our rubber is handcrafted and 100% natural. From rubber trees, instead of using petroleum products using natural rubber means it’s extremely waterproof and has high resilience, with a better eco footprint – perfect for your wellies! Our Matt Adjustable Wellingtons uses traditional welly design but is made from a more sustainable material.
Whilst rubber is waterproof, neoprene manages to one-up-it – by being highly flexible as well! Without losing any of its water repelling abilities, neoprene offers wearers great flexibility. Some worry neoprene would leak, but actually it’s the material you’d find used in a wetsuit! So rest assured, when you’re wearing our Groundhog Wellington Boot, you’ll be dry and warm on your walk!
Warm toasty toes
There’s nothing worse than cold feet! Frozen mornings are dreaded, and you’d be forgiven for thinking how you’d rather be wrapped up in bed than out-and-about for early dog duty.
Neoprene lined boots offer you real warmth. Giving superb insulation to the wearer, and the fact that it is waterproof means that neoprene will resist water and improves durability. Our flexible Neoprene Lined Boots offer you warmth in temperatures down to -20°C whilst still keeping your feet nice and toasty, and most importantly - dry!
Happy Feet
Here at ROCKFISH, we’ve made sure our wellies are comfy for all outdoor activities including dog walks and country pursuits. Our boots have been tried and tested in our home county of Cornwall and worn across the world. Made to last and offer the wearer the best possible wellington boot! If you’d like some suggestions as to where you can put your wellies to the test, check out our blog on 7 Cornish Walks to get your wellies dirty!
Including neoprene in our designs has allowed us to take a selection of our boots to the next level! For example, our Walkabout Wellington Boots are built with performance flex enhanced materials and designed with premium insole comfort in mind. We want you to be the most comfortable you’ve ever been in wellies! There’s even an abrasion resistant inner heel protector built in to keep your feet happy whilst out in any weather, all day long!

Here’s a supremely comfortable, snug pair – so snug, in fact, that if you’re planning on wearing thick socks, you’ll want to go a size up from your usual. The padding is extremely forgiving and will stay that way over the whole festival. With sturdy grip and four layers of natural rubber giving it full waterproofing, there is a gusset which is perfect for extra ventilation on any particularly hot days. They’re available in a range of glossier colours too, should you so desire. The brand also assures us on the website that these are resistant to horse urine, although we weren’t able to test that…
